This collection consists of a copy of Walter's Flora Caroliniana...Ornata Auctore Thomas Walter, Agricola, published in London, 1782. This is a handwritten copy of the entire text and includes the following note on the fly-leaf: "The following Manuscript copy of Walter's 'Flora Caroliniana' was transcribed literally from the printed copy, formerly the property of Dr. Henry Muhlenberg, by whom it was presented to Zaccheus Collins, Esqr. Of Philadelphia at whose decease, it was sold by the Administrator in 1832, and bought by the Loganian Library of Philadelphia in whose possession it now remains, being numbered in their catalogue No. 2188. Messrs. Jno. M. Cooper and Co. procured the original copy and amid other pressing duties the whole was written out in exactly three weeks by Wm. F. Feay, Savannah (Geo) May 25, 1860. The volume No. 2188 was brought from Philadelphia by Adams and Harnden's Express, and returned through the same medium."

Thomas Walter (ca. 1740-1788) was an early figure in American botany. Born in Hampshire, England, he immigrated to South Carolina in the 1760s and acquired a plantation on the Santee River in South Carolina, where he prepared his Flora Caroliniana, published in 1788. This publication used the Linnaeus' system of classification. He also had a herbarium which contained all of the specimens described in his book.
